In Cancun, you’d be hard-pressed to find a spot of secluded sand. Seclusion and quiet is easily found the farther south you go, but even spots like Playa del Carmen and Tulum are being gobbled up by development.

And while this is great for the tourism industry and the destination, it would be nice to find a place that is still off the beaten path without having to travel four-plus hours from the Cancun airport.

Enter Costa Mujeres. Located about 25 minutes north of the airport, near Puerto Juarez from where you catch the boat to Isla Mujeres, this stretch of sand is still shrouded in mangroves, leaving stretches of powder-soft sand and beach views that are actually of the beach, and not the hotel next door. There are just a handful of hotels in the area at the moment, including the new Riu Dunamar, a Secrets resort, and the Excellence Group’s three properties. But the word is out on this slice of paradise, and development is well on its way.

Right now the area of Costa Mujeres is a gated, luxury community, home to the Playa Mujeres Golf Club as well as a marina. But under a master development plan, the island is poised to positively boom with new developments and future projects.

Along Costa Mujeres Boulevard, there are more than 12 lots slated for tourism development. The project will be developed over the course of three years and at least 22,000 rooms are contemplated according to the urban development program. One of the first hotels to open as part of this development will be the Hotel Planet Hollywood Cancun, which will have 898 rooms. The hotel will be composed of three sections of rooms: one for adults only, one called Planet Hollywood, and a VIP section. There will also be a central square, a sports area and a minigolf course, as well as a Sky-zone with indoor trampolines, two tennis courts and an outdoor gym.

Palladium is gearing up to open two resorts there in the fall, as well. This will add more than 1,100 guestrooms, as well as a small village with an amphitheater, restaurants, bars, and kids club. The Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa will have 673 rooms, nine restaurants, and four pools, as well as a massive spa. The TRS Coral Hotel will have 473 rooms and will be all-inclusive and adults-only. There will be four restaurants, an infinity pool and a beach club. ”
